What is MEPS?
|

|
|
MEPS stands for Materials Engineering Professional Societies; it is an
organization for both undergraduates and graduates. MEPS gives
students a unique experience that many other departments do not
offer. Some of these experiences include:
- Field trips to laboratories and materials industries around the area such as Oakridge National Lab, Corning, NASA, and more;
- A
chance to participate in conferences throughout the year such as
MS&T and the International Conference & Exposition on Advanced Ceramics & Composites;
- MSE tailgates and a chance to host College of Engineering tailgates;
- Participate in Engineers-Week (we won by a landslide last year!);
- and many more opportunites to meet fellow classmates, professors, and alumni.

What are we expecting out of you?

|
We meet once a month and the meetings are typically an hour long (with food!). As of now, we do not have a set day or time, but that information will come soon. We expect that you attend as many meetings and events as possible because the more people we have, the stronger we are as a department. The more events you participate in, the better your chances are at being asked to attend the conferences. The biggest incentive for students is the trip to the International Conference & Exposition on Advanced Ceramics & Composites in Cocoa Beach, FL.
Also, we urge everyone to join Material Advantage, but it is not required to participate in MEPS events. It is advantageous to join because it gives you benefits throughout the year and gives MEPS at VT better chance of being selected for a Chapter of Excellence award. Throughout the year, you will receive top materials magazines with the newest technology and publications. As a member of Material Advantage, you are also given the chance to publish your own work in these magazines and even speak at conferences. With a Material Advantage membership, you in turn become a member of four top materials societies; including:
- The American Ceramics Society (ACerS)
- Association for Iron & Steel Technology (AIST)
- ASM International
- The Minerals, Metals, & Materials Society (TMS)
