Meeting 1 - September 2, 2008
|
 |
|
|
1. Tailgates. We hold tailgates for just about every home
game outside of Holden Hall for the department. Two of the tailgates this
year we will be hosting the College of Engineering (GT and UVA). Our first
tailgate
is this Saturday. We will begin cooking at 11AM..set up around
10:30AM..clean up around 12:45 PM. If you want to come to all, set up and leave, come late
and clean up..whatever is great! Keep in mind, the more events you come
to/participate in, the better your chances are at attending the big Annual
Composites/Ceramics conference held in Cocoa Beach, FL...I'll talk about
this further down.
2. Next on the list was the field trips. We want to try and go on about 4
field
trips this year if our funds allow us. We were trying to encompass all
areas of materials science. Previously, we have gone to NASA Langley and Corning in
Christiansburg. We have a couple possible ideas so far, but are welcome to
more! So far we were thinking of Savannah River National Lab in SC, Corning, US Steel in Roanoke, Wake Forest Institute of Regenerative Medicine,
GoodYear,
Oakridge National Lab, and possibly BAE Systems. We will be making a survey
for everyone to vote on their top choices in a couple weeks.
3. Material Advantage is a big part of MEPS. We would like all of our members to become members of M.A. because it helps us become a Chapter of Excellence
(only 6 are given this award) and we have been a Chapter of excellence for
the
past 3 years. We also get a portion of the membership fee (only $25
dollars!)..so it is kind of like your dues if you want to think of it that
way. You also get something out of the membership. You will get magazines and
journals from many of the top leading National organizations such as ACerS
and TMS.
4. Conferences. We go to two conferences each year. The first conference
is
MS&T in Pittsburgh, PA on October 5-9. This is a chance for students to sit
in
on seminars from leading organizations, companies, and schools. There are
many
events for you to gain experience with materials science; i.e. there are
mock
interviews, mixers to meet people looking to hire for summer internships,
dinners, etc. It is a great opportunity! I didn't get to go this year, but
currently there are 4 people speaking at this conference from MSE including
myself. If you would like more information about MS&T, talk to Dr.
Aning..he
is speaking again this year. If you do want to go..send me an e-mail back
ASAP! The second conference is the Annual Composites, Ceramics, and
Structures
Conference in Cocoa Beach, FL. This conference is limited in space, about
12
people go. We go to work security and registration (paid about $8) for the
week. The trip down and hotel are completely paid for! You get to sit in
on
seminars on the latest materials and you can even hand your resume out to
companies that attend the conference. I went last year and got a summer job
interview. Since there is such limited space for those who get to go, you
MUST
attend events and participate in cleaning up/setting up/etc.
5. There is a MSE Open House on October 20. We usually have a lot of help
for
this. It is the main reason a lot of people join MSE!! We need help
setting
up, working demos, answering questions, cleaning up... Our open house is one
of
the best and we have to keep it that way! It is also a great opportunity to
learn some more about MSE by working a demo and even answering other
people's
questions.
6. If you are interested in outreach activities, we are currently trying to
start a Demo Kit program where we make demo kits complete with materials and
instructions to send to elementary through high schools to gain interest in
science! Each year there is a fewer number of students applying for
engineering
schools. We believe that by engaging their interest early, they will make
the
choice to become an engineer or a scientist. We are in the beginning
phases,
but if this interests you, please talk to Charles Sprinkle.

Meeting 2 - October 8, 2008
|
 |
|
|
1. MS&T ' 08: Jill LeBlanc won 2nd runner up out of 11 students at the student speaking contest, Charles and some other students presented our demo kits to the ACerS board and received positive feedback, JUMR received good feedback at the exhibition booth.
2. MSE Open House: When? October 20, 2008. Where? Holden Hall. We will be providing dinner for those who help set up the open house. Dinner (hopefully subs) will be around 5:45 PM. There will be a sign up sheet posted outside of Diane Folz's room (second floor next to elevator) for those that did not sign up at the meeting. We need people to assist with demos, answering questions in the hallway, the fireproof suit/bulletproof vest demo, refreshment restock, MEPS booth, and clean up. The freshmen will come to Holden around 7:20 and they have until about 9:00 PM. PLEASE go sign up or e-mail me back.
3. SEC Freshman Major Mixer: When? October 22, 2008 from 6-7:30 pm. We have enough people for this as of now, but if something changes, look for another e-mail.
4. First LEGO League: Regional tournament held at Blacksburg High School on November 16th. First LEGO League is a science themed robotics competition for ages 9-14 which aims to get students enthused about science and engineering and helps them develop problem solving and team building skills. Volunteers are greatly needed. Please contact Jessica Piness at pinessjm@vt.edu for more information.
5. Field Trips: There will be a Wake Forest Institute of Regenerative Medicine field trip on November 3rd. We will be leaving between 6:30 and 7:00 am and returning the same evening. This is going to be a great opportunity for those interested in biomaterials. We only have room for about 10-12 people, so get back to be as soon as possible.
6. Dinner at the Homeplace: We want to plan a dinner at Homeplace (amazing food!), please fill out the survey that was sent out in an e-mail today.
7. AK Steel TechTalk: When? October 28th. Time and place? TBA.
8. Bloggers for ACerS: Peter Ray with the American Ceramics Society is looking for students to post blogs for their ceramic technology website. These posts only need to be 1-2 sentances about a current event or something you've read that may be interesting to other ceramic engineers. ACerS is willing to pay $15-20 for each post and you are required to post 2 blogs each week for an entire semester. Sounds like good money.

Meeting 5 - February 18, 2009
|
 |
|
|
This meeting was mainly an overview of all events scheduled for this
semester. Below is a summary of what we went over, if you have any
questions or want more details - please e-mail Kristen Zimmermann at
kazimmer@vt.edu.
1. Congressional Visits Days - Date: March 31 - April 1 Congressional
Visits Days (CVDs) are held in Washington D.C. every spring. CVDs are
a chance to bring engineers, researchers, scientists, educators, and
technology executives to the nation's capital to raise the visibility
and awareness for science, engineering, and technology. Students meet
with Senators, Congressmen, and their staffs to advocate federal
support for fundamental research in the physical sciences and
engineering. The first night is a Student Night at a local restaurant,
the next day students attend an orientation where everyone is briefed
on how to approach and talk to government officials. Over the
following days, students visit offices of Virginia congressmen and
attend congressional hearings.
2. Demo Kits - MSE Play Day - Date: TBA MEPS
has initiated a program creating demo kits dedicated to engaging the
interest in engineering (mainly materials!) in elementary through high
school students. We have presented this idea at CVDs, MS&T, and
other annual meetings and have gained great support. These kits will
contain items needed for each experiment or demonstration, in addition
to a manual explaining how to perform the experiments. We aim to start
the program out on a small scale, distributing kits (at no fee) around
the area and eventually expand to a nation-wide program with the help
of other schools and professional organizations.
(1) We are
forming a committee that will be working on developing
experiments/demos that will target appropriate age levels, will write
the procedures for each, and will put forth the effort to see this
program through the end! If you are interested, please contact Charles
Sprinkle at csprinkl@vt.edu.
(2) We have developed about 3 kits and want to have a "play day" to get
some hands on experience in performing the demonstrations. We want to
be able to write the procedure so that it is coherent and easy to
follow. I will be sending out a survey to see when the best time is to
do this. It will be a fun time, food, and you are NOT obligated to be
on the Demo Kit Committee if you participate in this event.
3. Field Trips - Date: TBA
We are trying to set up a trip to Oak Ridge National Lab.
4. E-Week - Date: March 22-28
There are events all week, check them out at www.sec.vt.edu. I will be
sending out a survey to ensure that we have interest in all events
(since we win every year!!)
5. Mug Drop/Speaking Contest/Putting Contest
Every year we have a speaking contest at VT to see who best represents
the department. Whoever wins this contest will have a chance to
compete in a national contest at MS&T - top three placements win
money! We also want to see if anyone has interest in participating in
the Mug Drop and Putting Contests at MS&T (see Chase's e-mail or
the MS&T or ACerS websites for more information). Please email
Chase Hammond at chase87@vt.edu if interested in any or all events!
6. The Big Event - April 18, 2009
A chance to participate in community service in the Southwestern VA
area. Give back to the community for about 3 to 4 hours! Please
e-mail me (Kristen) at kazimmer@vt.edu if interested. You MUST BE 100%
POSITIVE THAT YOU CAN ATTEND!
7. Relay for Life - April 24, 2009
